Natural gas heats our homes, warms our water, and cooks our meals, and it's safe when handled properly. But a leak is serious, and knowing what to do could protect your family.

In this video, ACTION shares the essential natural gas safety steps every household should know. Natural gas is naturally odorless, so utilities add a distinctive scent, often described as rotten eggs, to help you detect a leak. Other warning signs can include a hissing sound near a gas line or appliance, dead vegetation near a buried line, or bubbles in standing water outside.

If you smell gas, act immediately. Leave the building right away and take everyone, including pets, with you. Don't turn light switches on or off, don't use anything that could create a spark, and don't use your phone inside. Once you're safely outside, call 911 and your gas utility from a safe distance, and stay out until professionals say it's safe to return.

Prevention matters too. Have your gas appliances, furnace, and water heater inspected regularly, keep the area around them clear, and make sure you have working carbon monoxide detectors in your home. ACTION's licensed technicians can inspect your gas-fired equipment and help you spot problems early.

Safety comes first, always. Watch this video, share it with your family, and call ACTION at 402-423-6960 to schedule an inspection.
